Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems - Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science (EMMS)
The Engineering Mechanics and Materials Science (EMMS) group’s research spans materials testing, characterization, and modeling at the production, processing, and component levels. With emphasis on experimental aspects, primary EMMS research areas include conventional as well as advanced manufacturing, thermomechanical process development, mechanical testing, and microstructure characterization.
- Monotonic mechanical behavior of metallic and non-metallic materials can be measured at strain rates on the order of 10-5 ~ 104 s-1 while cyclic behavior can be assessed under one or more of tensile, compressive, or shear deformation.
- Thermomechanical processing allows for temperature control rates up to 10,000°C/s coupled with environmental control as well as axial and/or torsional deformation.
- The EMMS group is also equipped to identify material behavior at ballistic rates with in-situ imaging capability for hypervelocity impacts exceeding 106 s-1.
- Additional material characterization capabilities include chemical analysis, microscopy, 3D analysis, chemical properties, and thermo-mechanical properties.
Our services are available to non-MSU researchers on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for details regarding collaboration.
